POLYESTER

Among the microfibers discussed elsewhere, polyester is probably the best known. It is a silky, somewhat shiny fiber that is extremely durable. Polyester holds its shape well through repeated wash cycles and helps make shirts “wrinkle-free.”

“It used to be that wearing polyester meant you were wearing poor fitting clothes from a low-end retailer. Polyester has matured, and I think it makes a great addition to my wardrobe, especially for travel.”

Polyester’s biggest downside is that it does not breathe as well as natural fibers like cotton and wool. Being aware of that reality means choosing polyester clothes for the right types of weather. Wearing a tight polyester pair of pants on a 100-degree day, would not be a great idea. However, wearing a nice pair of polyester pants that maintain their shine and shape to work regularly is a great option.

The other element that polyester brings to the table is its effectiveness in blending. Adding a percentage of polyester fibers to a dress shirt not only adds a layer of shine, but also makes caring for the shirt easier.

“I have to be honest and say that I prefer natural fibers, but with all the traveling I do, I pack a lot of polyester products because they maintain their shape so well. I have come to really like the shine as well, and so I find myself mixing in polyester blends regularly. Don’t be afraid of polyester, just buy it wisely and you’ll be happy,” says Topper.
